On Facing Fears | Darling Magazine

My whole life I’ve lived under a cloak of fear. It’s taken on many colors throughout the changing seasons of girlhood, marriage, and motherhood, but it always seems to come back to the same basic insecurities. Fear of what people think of me. Fear of failure. Fear that I will never be good enough.

But in my early twenties, I began following Nicole Kidman’s life story. The bold and daring Australian actress with a soft voice and kind eyes captivated me. Why? Because despite how different our worlds were, I found something within her story that resonated with my own. Fear.

“I never want to be governed by fear. Even though I feel it, and I can certainly respond to it, I don’t want it to be the thing that stops me.”
—Nicole Kidman

A self-admitted introvert, Nicole has chosen a career in films. An industry in America that is highly publicized and filled with criticism from the press. She has taken on unique film projects, proving time and time again her ability to play characters from a broad range of difficult personalities.

She has risen above both her public and private circumstances, spearheading her fears and facing them head on.

Within her lies a kind of silent heroism; the ability to wage war in the corridors of her mind, bravely winning and losing to herself, simultaneously. Fear can sway us in either direction in this pendulum that is life. It can control us, or liberate us. It can captivate us, or motivate us.

I believe women know this struggle so well. We wrestle with our own unique fears that drive our insecurities and fuel our doubts. We are fearful of the unknown and the risk it takes to be vulnerable. We cling to our comfort zones and the predictability we feel secure in.

But let us purpose to choose a different path, one lined with risks and reward. A life not void of mistakes, but a life that is well-lived and well trodden. Let us seek new adventures and write brave stories. Let us wage battle with ourselves. And win.

A life lived full and free. It’s worth fighting for.
