overalls

Fall is finally here, and our wardrobe choices are beginning to evolve. Long sleeves, jackets, and trousers will soon replace our tanks, tees, and dresses. With jumpsuits having made a permanent comeback, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing overalls hit the streets this season, as well. Though birthed as work wear, they’ve made it into almost every denim collection today. Overalls are no longer just a trend, but a classic must-have for fall and winter.

Maybe you’ve never considered yourself as the type to rock this number, but with the garment’s impressive history and aggressive presence in the fashion world, it’s time to start embracing the practicality of this denim onesie. Below, we’re sharing how.

Originally called “slops,” overalls were first introduced in 1750 as a protective article of clothing for workers doing physical labor. These “slops” were intended to prevent wear and tear on the workers’ actual clothing. In the 1800s, when cotton became available at a cheap price, denim began replacing the linen canvas originally used. Shortly after this practical change in fabrication, manufacturers expanded the production of overalls all across America. It wasn’t until the late 70s that overalls started to be worn as a fashion statement. By the time the 90s hit, overalls were the new fad. Reruns of TV shows like My So Called Life, Blossom, Full House, and Friends still stand as a testament to the trend.

Today, overalls have become even more relevant with different styles and silhouettes offered. The key to wearing them right remains the same, though — keep the look elevated rather than juvenile.

To start your search, find a pair that fits you snug in the hips. The last thing you want to do is take it back to the oversized workwear look. Then, find a wash that suits you –medium to dark washes will keep everything looking sleek and sophisticated.

Below are a couple ideas on how to wear them:

1. Try finding a white button down blouse; leave the top two to three buttons unbuttoned. Throw the overalls on and top the look off with a black blazer. Finish the ensemble with a pair of heels.

2. Rock a simple black or heather grey crewneck t-shirt under your overalls. Finish the look with a handkerchief around your neck. Strappy tan sandals would pair well with this aesthetic.

3. If you want to go even bolder, rock overalls that aren’t your conventional body. Leave the accessories at home, and let this vintage number do all the talking.

No matter which style you go with, wear it with confidence. Who knows, maybe you’ll help the rest of the ladies jump on board the overall wagon, too.

Have you embraced this classic trend? How do you style them?
