Fall is here, temperatures are dropping, and my persistent obsession to pile multiple layers in a trendy yet flattering manner has inspired every outfit I’ve recently worn. Layering can be challenging, as you are combining a variety of materials, textures, prints, and color to achieve a purposeful yet effortless look. But the good news is, there are absolutely no rules and no limits in fashion right now.

Black and navy are the biggest complimentary combination, metallics and sequins are appropriate for a sunny cafe run, leather trim is literally everywhere—including your quilted or tweed sweaters—and (my favorite) in your face studs are adorning every boot, heel, or sandal and being styled super casually with skinnies and t-shirts. The perfect fall formula is no longer…the one and only decree I can pass along is be get creative, have confidence, and love and feel good about what you wear and who you are.

I am so excited to share with a few key points to keep in mind while layering along with several images that have inspired many of my looks! To start, here is a list of functional layer pieces I use all throughout fall:

-Chunky knitted sweaters
-Chambray shirts (fitted and oversized)
-Structured coats
-Slouchy cardigans
-Sweeping floor length skirts
-Lace of all sorts
-Button ups
-Skinny pants
-Leg warmers
-Knee or ankle boots.

Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind…

1. Pick one statement color
Multiple standout colors tend to compete rather than compliment. Stick with the nudes, grey, blacks, or softer pigments. I love throwing in a neon coral, pink, or mustard yellow with the neutrals!

2. Throw in a print or two
Adding a print or two brings a more dynamic and even youthful edge to your look. I particularly prefer incorporating prints as it allows you to be creative and an opportunity of expression. There are no rules as to what prints to mix, but more importantly, the colors, materials, and size of your prints. Some ideas: stripes, polka-dots, aztec, floral, galaxy, or animal.

3. Layer different textures
Using textures through the combination of different materials gives versatility and depth. This might be anything from a fur vest, velvet blazer, denim jacket, wool coat, knitted scarfs, silk button ups, and the list goes on! This is my favorite aspect of layering!

4. Use the small accessories
Take advantage of the smaller accessories to help achieve your layered look. I love using bulky scarfs, leg warmers, turbans, socks, and tights. My favorites are by far a big bulky scarf and tights worn under distressed denim shorts. You can also use your accessories to incorporate that pop of color or prints!
