There is a beautiful saying that I heard a few years ago: “Shattered glass still glitters.” I was 27 and in the midst of a season of change and growing pains. Money woes, career uncertainty and bad roommate situations (bad might be an understatement), all the things that would make any person crumble into the fetal position.

The most painful thing about that season was definitely the relationship endings. They say some friends are for a reason, a season or a lifetime. The friendships I lost during that time, I most certainly would have said were for a lifetime. Some faded with time. Some forcibly ended because they were toxic. While others, I walked away from upon the realization that I deserved better.

Not all people are meant to go with us into every season and stage of life.

This is a sobering reality of getting older: Not all people are meant to go with us into every season and stage of life. As we mature, some friendships, some relationships and some people can’t go with us. While letting go can feel impossible, it is necessary in order for us to grow on our own.

As I’m getting older, I’m learning that even when something ends, it doesn’t take away the value, the impact or the beauty of what once was. Sometimes, it just takes time and space to heal in order to be able to look back and appreciate what we once had. Shattered glass may not be able to be repaired, but when the sun hits it just right, it will glitter.

Shattered glass may not be able to be repaired, but when the sun hits it just right, it will glitter.

With hope,

Is there a former friend or ex who greatly impacted your life? In what ways, did they help you grow? What beauty did you find in acceptance and letting go?
