Our regular Darling Dinners have exposed a growing need for women to have a safe space to gather together and a deep desire to create a community of strong, loving, and supportive women. Because of this rising need for community connection, Darling decided on a fresh take from an “evening of conversation” to create our first ever “morning of conversation.” This sweet beginning of our new project, the “Darling Brunch,” was hosted last Saturday by the talented Kara of Willow and Niche, assisted by Stephanie of Five by Five Catering.

Doors opened to Kara’s soul sanctuary of a downtown Los Angeles loft; it was ethereal, heavenly, feminine beauty embodied in a living space. The aroma of a gourmet savory and sweet brunch menu filled the air, proving equal parts soul and body nourishment. Chairs cozied around a rustic, natural wooden table where a community of mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and strangers would come together for the first time and later leave with gems of wisdom from conversations had with one another. One of the most beautiful parts of a Darling gathering is the transformation that happens once the doors first open to the time when ladies trickle out of the safe haven. It is a true testament to the magic that happens when women are united in sharing a nourishing meal and furthermore, sharing their hearts.

The creative inspiration behind our brunch was our recent summer issue with the theme of oasis. What practices allow you create your own oasis and find your space in the desert? How do we release the guilt of not having a packed schedule to allow yourself the time for restoration? These questions circulated the table and a raw, beautiful discussion flowed from the hearts of women sharing their own stories — stories of wanting to be strong women, stories of releasing negative thought patterns, and stories of standing up for the truth in a sea of lies about our worth.

In this same sense, when our lives feel dry and barren, it is not why this season is happening, but rather how it is serving to transform us and our hearts.

Finding our oasis in the desert is about believing in tomorrow. When life seems to be dry and barren, our thirst is quenched with faith for the future. One guest poetically spoke of the analogy of a peach pit. She taught, “Luckily, a peach couldn’t talk because it would say, ‘That’s it, I’m dead. They’ve buried me. It’s all over. I’m dead.” Ah, but what the peach pit does not yet realize is what it is on its way to becoming. This peach pit, though at first may seem dead, dry, and barren, will flourish and grow into a giant peach tree with strong roots and expanding branches, no longer in darkness, but bearing the sweet fruit of fresh peaches. In this same sense, when our lives feel dry and barren, it is not why this season is happening, but rather how it is serving to transform us and our hearts. If we were just to expand our perspective, what is it that we are becoming?

We will never fully “arrive” in this life as perfect and complete, because learning and refinement is an ever-constant process. However, beauty exists in the transformation that we experience along the way. Our oasis in the desert is found in feeling the nurturing light beaming from the sun and having faith for the process, for the process of becoming is intricately woven and crafted in each season. The quenching rains are soon approaching with the coming fall, so the question will remain: how is a season of drought at work to transform you? The significance of each season calls us to return to a place of gratitude for what lays behind us and faith for what is to come. Cheers.
