Georgetown is Washington, DC’s hidden gem. Among a mass of 18th century row houses, brick sidewalks, and cobblestone streets lays the Capital’s best kept secret. From high end eateries, designer showrooms, and breathtaking scenery, Georgetown blends classic and modern with architecture and boutiques that will uniquely satisfy any explorer.

If you have the afternoon to explore, the opportunities are endless. Start at Dumbarton Oaks Botanical Gardens to find a maze of backdrops, including a mass of indoor and outdoor gardens, an outdoor pool, and a museum. Perfect for the winter months, the Washington Harbour offers an 11,000 foot outdoor ice rink on the waterfront that is a staple to every Georgetown native.

Cupcakes were popularized years ago thanks to Georgetown Cupcake, but the real winner is Baked and Wired. This café offers a wide selection of cupcakes, including vegan and gluten free options. Thomas Sweet, a small ice creamery with a hometown feel, caters to children and adults alike with a variety of frozen yogurt, ice cream, and fudge that satisfy even the pickiest of taste buds.

For a quick bite to eat, Kafe Leopold offers an extensive menu including a la carte pastries and French entrees as a worthwhile sanctuary after a long shopping expedition. Los Cuantes serves the impossible-to-find Southern specialty white cheese dip and an experience. The colorful design and warm ambiance make for a memorable meal.

If you’re itching to decorate, Paper Source is home to a vast collection of artistry papers whose opportunities are endless, beautiful enough to be framed, yet affordable enough to use in a craft project. The scrapbook store also offers unique trinkets and notecards perfect for gift giving and home décor. Jonathan Adler  offers memorable and quirky decorations to spice up any home. His designs are modern yet also match perfectly with traditional designs.

Georgetown is home to endless clothing shops, but there are a few independently owned boutiques that are true prize winners. Buffalo Exchange is an upmarket consigner that houses unique finds for unbeatable prices. What brings home the gold is their vast collection of footwear that can satisfy any shoe obsession. Sangaree is another that offers a hand-picked blend of designers with looks that can transition from day to night.

  2. When my husband and I were engaged/newly-married and very poor on weekends we would hop on the metro go to a smithsonian (he often indulged my love of modern art and Andy Goldsworthy and let me pick) then hop back on the metro grab a coffee and some Greek food at a tiny little corner shop slightly after where you cross the bridge to get to Georgetown on a little side street, and we would just walk holding hands, it was lovely. I will forever love that place.
